2007 Hunting Season Newsletter

Hello from Paul Janke of Lonetom Outfitting.

Another year has passed and 2008 is here.  To recap the 2007 hunting season here at Lone Tom Outfitting, we had a lot of good hunts.  As usual, my hunts could not have been a success without the help of my dedicated guides that put 100% into the making of our year.

Luke Selby has 2 years in with Lone Tom Outfitting, and he is a top notch guide and horseman.  Gary Von Schmidt also returned, and has guided for 9 years.  A veteran guide like Gary, with his experience is irreplaceable.  I look forward to working with the guides again in 2008.

Also, Gerald Morris and Joe Brown guided some special hunts for Mule Deer and Elk.  And a big thank you to Marcia for keeping everything at the lodge running smoothly.

The Lion season went off with 100% harvest for 13 clients.  Many nice trophy Tom Lion harvested, and 4 Bobcat.

Luke and I had several day rides and fishing trips into the Flat Top Wilderness Area.  We finished our young horses, with Luke riding Dollar, and I trained Marlin.  They are turning into good mountain saddle horses.

The archery season was great.  5 hunters with 5 Elk.  Opening day, 2 bulls were taken.  First we had 3 hunters from Detroit.  Chad Bristol took a nice 6 point, scoring 296 points...Pope & Young.  We also had an experience with a bear that Jim Perras won't forget, since the bear tracked up his Elk before we did.

Next, we hunted GMU 2 with Mark Stephenson from Texas, who took a good bull, scoring 337 points, with a 31 inch brow tine.  Very nice trophy!

New for this year, we had 2 Antelope hunters on the Butler Ranch, and harvested 2 nice trophies.  If interested, I will have Antelope vouchers for 2008 also.

On the hunt at my main camp at Fowler Peak, we took 6 bulls for 6 hunters, with 2 of them being dandy - 6 point bulls.  The 2nd season hunt at Fowler Peak, we harvested 2 bulls for 4 hunters.  Other bulls were seen, but no opportunities were presented.  Then a big snow came in, and made hunting difficult, and so we finished with 50% on that hunt.  Also had 3 hunters in a drop camp that moved to lower elevation because of the snow.  Vito Centofanti from Minnesota took a nice 5 point bull, so they were 33% on that camp.

November 2nd we had 3 more hunters from Minnesota at Fowler Peak camp.  The Elk seemed to have migrated after the big snow, and hunting was poor, with no bulls killed.

On our leased ranch for Mule Deer, we had 3 hunters who took 3 nice buck deer, with 100% there.

November 26th, we started our Cow Elk hunts.  26 hunters killed their Elk, putting meat in the freezers.  If interested in a December Cow Elk hunt, by all means give me a call.  Licenses are available for the coming season.

To add up our year here at Lone Tom Outfitting, we harvested 13 Mountain Lion, 21 Bull Elk, 3 Mule Bucks, 2 Antelope, and 29 Cow Elk.

I was on the South Fork last week on my snowmobile, and saw over 300 Elk with lots of Bulls leftover, so I am looking forward to another good year in 2008!

See you next season!
