Hello from Paul
Janke of Lonetom Outfitting.
The weather has
been relatively mild this year with good snow until
mid January with very little snow since then. Warm temperatures now so the
wildlife has had an easy winter. No winter kill or wolves which is great
for our elk population.
The mountain
lion harvest was great, filling 9 out of 10 clients. Here
at Lone Tom Outfitting, we took a large tom lion for Greg Wiesner,
scoring officially PxY 15&10/16”. The largest lion taken in Colorado
in 2008. The lion population is very strong in the White River Valley.
We took several summer
horseback pack trips into The Flat Tops Wilderness Area. Our long time
clients, the Rob Theno group,
came once again and packed into the Island Lakes area, which I feel is the
prettiest spot in the Flat Tops with good fishing. The weather was warm
and sunny, with no rain.
We packed our high
country Fowler Peak camp and started archery
season with 6 bow hunters, taking 4 elk for 66% kill rate. Jeff Petriches
took the best 6 pointer, scoring 292 PxY and Steve Herndon had lots of
excitement on a bugle hunt and took a nice 5 point bugled in at 9 yards
head on the last night of the hunt. Congratulations to Steve on that
challenging shot.
Next, we moved camp to
GMU 2 with 2 trophy hunters drawing
the coveted tags. Chuck Duke harvested a nice 6 pointer scoring 315 points
opening morning and old friend Dan Stone along with hunting companion,
Mark Stevenson, hunted for 7 days looking over 60 plus bulls and taking a
beautiful, wide 328 point bull on the last morning. Many good elk seen on
this hunt. If you have 15 points or more, this is a hunt you can
harvest a good bull.
For Oct. 11th
hunt, back at Fowler Peak, we have 6 good hunters
from Fairbanks, Alaska taking 4 bulls. We had a very stormy, windy hunt,
with client John Merrion hanging tough and took a nice bull with veteran
guide, Gary Von Schmidt on the last evening of the hunt. Congratulations
for staying and hunting hard until the end.
Drop camps took 2 elk
on the first week in Oct. The 2nd hunt we
had 4 clients with 3 opportunities with no elk taken but that’s hunting.
2nd season drop camps were 40% kill.
The Nov. 1st
hunt we were 66% kill rate with Bryan Chatwell taking
a bull at 580 yards. I personally ranged that bull. Bryan said “ I
can make that shot. I can kill him.” We had plenty of time and Bryan
put 2 into his ribs 2" apart. Great shooting from a
great hunter.
Once again we had cow
elk hunters in December and took 19 cows
for 22 hunters. Plenty of tags available so come on out and go hunting for
the best value for an elk at $250 for the license.
We had Luke Selby
guiding again for the 3rd year and camp-tender Frank Logan
along with veteran guide Gary Von Schnidt.
A big thank you to
Marcia for running the base operation.
We at Lone Tom
Outfitting are looking forward to a good year.
2009 bookings are
coming in fast so book early.
Happy Trails,
Paul
